Florida Republican Candidate Touts Trump Support In State House Bid

State Senate Rules Chairwoman Debbie Mayfield, R-Indialantic, has launched a campaign for an open Florida House seat, pointing to support from former President Donald Trump.

Mayfield cannot run for the Senate again in November because of term limits.

She opened a campaign account Tuesday in Brevard County’s House District 32, which will be open because Rep. Thad Altman, R-Indialantic, faces term limits.

Mayfield will face a Republican primary battle against former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon, who entered the race in February 2023.

Mayfield’s campaign issued a news release Wednesday that included an endorsement from Trump. Mayfield served in the House from 2008 to 2016 before being elected to the Senate.

She became chairwoman of the Senate Rules Committee in 2023 after serving two years as Senate majority leader.
