Michigan wrestler Chris Cannon enters NCAA transfer portal

Michigan wrestler Chris Cannon entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. The two-time All-American had a “do not contact” designation.

Cannon originally transferred to Michigan ahead of the 2023-24 season from Northwestern. However, he wrestled one match this past winter before being ruled out for the rest of the year with injury.

Cannon was plugged into the Wolverines’ lineup at 133 pounds, but once he was hurt, Dylan Ragusin burnt his redshirt.

Ragusin went on to become a Big Ten finalist and finished 5th at the NCAA Tournament, becoming an All-American for the first time.

Should Ragusin stay at 133, it looks like he’ll man the spot once again in 2024-25. As far as Cannon is concerned, there was speculation he could go 141 last year, but stayed at 133.

Now that’ll he finish his college career elsewhere, Cannon could opt to go either weight.

Cannon, a two-time All-American, went 20-10 in 2022-23 but went 1-2 at 133 pounds at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

However, Cannon finished in 7th place at 133 in back-to-back tournaments in 2021 and ‘22. Cannon is 52-22 in his career after wrestling three varsity seasons with the Wildcats and one match at Michigan.

Cannon went 19-2 during his redshirt season in 2019-20. There are rumblings he could bump up to 141, but either way, Cannon should slide in easily at 133 or 141 next season and give the Wolverines another All-American contender.

To keep up with the latest players on the move, check out On3’s Transfer Portal wire.

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.
