Sheffield Wednesday should raid Huddersfield Town for £8.9k-a-week brute this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday will need new bodies in the summer, in several different positions on the pitch.

Regardless of whether or not Sheffield Wednesday stay in the Championship, and regardless of whether or not Danny Rohl stays, the Owls will have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer market.

As things stand, there’s at least 15 players set to leave Hillsborough this summer.

Positions all over the pitch will need to be bolstered, and in an ideal world where Wednesday stay up and Rohl stays on board, the German coach will be given the resources he needs to bring in some young and hungry players who’ll really suit his style of play.

One position that may need bolstering in particular this summer is at centre-back.

Di’Shon Bernard, Liam Palmer, and Dominic Iorfa are among those out of contract this summer and it seems like Bernard, out of the three, may look to move on to bigger and better things after an impressive maiden season with Sheffield Wednesday.

And if that’s the case then it’ll leave a huge hole at the back for Sheffield Wednesday, but one that could easily be filled by someone from their Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town star Michael Helik would be perfect for Sheffield Wednesday

Helik is an old school centre-back.

He joined Huddersfield from Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in 2022 and has since made 76 league appearances for the Terriers, scoring an incredible nine goals this season.

The Polish international and Huddersfield captain is a brute force at both ends of the pitch, proving deadly in corners and set-pieces having scored two headed goals this season and seven with his feet.

And Helik also boasts a lot of similar defensive stats to Bernard, and in a weaker Huddersfield Town side who’ve conceded 75 goals compared to Sheffield Wednesday’s 65; Helik beats Bernard for interceptions per game this season and also clearances per game.

Helik and Bernard are also tightly matched for tackles per game, with Helik at 1.4 and Bernard at 1.5 (stats from Sofascore).

In his career, Helik now has 157 Championship appearances, with 17 goals to his name, also boasting seven caps for the Polish national team.

Can Sheffield Wednesday realistically sign Michael Helik

The main ingredient needed for a possible Helik swoop this summer is Huddersfield Town being relegated and Sheffield Wednesday staying up.

And as things stand, that’s looking like a very possible scenario.

Helik is too good for League One and will surely have suitors if Town are relegated, and the Terriers may have to cash in on some of their assets in order to start a rebuild.

Though it certainly wouldn’t be a cheap move.

Although the 28-year-old is out of contract in 2025, he’s currently valued at £2.56million on Transfermarkt, though that fee may differ greatly if Huddersfield are soon to be a League One side.

But Helik earns £8.9k-a-week at Huddersfield, per Salary Sport, which doesn’t even put him in the top 10 earners at Sheffield Wednesday, and with plenty of players set to leave this summer, there could be room in the wage bill for a marquee signing or two.

It obviously depends on Dejphon Chansiri and how much he’s willing to do in the summer.

He may prefer to spend his money on facilities instead of players, and then scour the free and loan markets once again, with Rohl no doubt set to get a tune out of whichever players he has at his disposal.

But Helik would be a huge signing for Sheffield Wednesday and a huge upgrade on the likes of Bambo Diaby who’s been a divisive figure this season.
