Just 11 minutes in three matches: Daniel Farke needs to hand £5m Leeds player a recall on Saturday - opinion

Daniel Farke has the opportunity to rotate some of his Leeds United side against Southampton on Saturday.

The Whites head into the final day with their automatic promotion hopes all but over with Ipswich Town sat three points clear in second place after beating Coventry City on Tuesday night.

Ipswich just have to avoid defeat at home to already relegated Huddersfield Town in order to secure promotion, meaning it is all but certainly the play-offs for Leeds.

Given Leeds’ recent form, Saturday could provide Farke with the chance to experiment slightly with his starting XI.

It still needs to be strong enough for Leeds to capitalise on a potential Ipswich slip-up, but there is no point continuing to repeat the same mistakes he has done recently.

Mateo Joseph is among those who should come in for his full league debut, but there are other areas of the pitch where there should be changes after such a terrible performance at QPR last time out.

Farke should hand Glen Kamara a recall for Leeds on Saturday

Leeds’ midfield was one of numerous problems in the 4-0 defeat to QPR, offering so much time and space for the home side to attack the back four.

Ilia Gruev was criticised for his involvement in both of the opening two goals, but in truth, his partnership with Archie Gray just has not worked across the last three matches.

Gruev likes to play very deep and sit just in front of the back four, while Gray is a player who pushes on, which just leaves so many gaps in the middle. As such, Glen Kamara needs a recall.

Kamara is almost like a happy medium between Gruev and Gray in that he is capable of both sitting alongside Gruev and picking up the ball from defence, as well as providing the link to the attack.

The £5m summer signing from Rangers had admittedly been struggling for form before being dropped, but had been suffering with illness and should now be back fully fit.

He has played just 11 minutes across Leeds’ last three matches which is strange considering how heavily involved he was during the run of 12 wins in 13 between New Year’s Day and the March international break.

On average, Kamara loses possession just 5.9 times per match and while his passing may not be overly adventurous, his ability to keep the ball undoubtedly goes unnoticed.
