Liverpool are now seriously looking at signing 23-year-old Crystal Palace player this summer

Most Liverpool supporters would agree that a couple of areas of their squad can be improved upon this summer.

As Arne Slot prepares to arrive at Anfield, he and the newly-appointed recruitment team have to get things right.

It has already been claimed that work is underway on signing a new centre-back. Meanwhile, reports that a new wide player will be targeted should be music to supporters’ ears.

Fans will have their own ideas about who should and should not be in the Liverpool squad next season. But, ultimately, the final say will likely come down to Slot, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes. As far as Edwards goes, he’s long-since earned the trust of followers of the club.

For example, if Liverpool are targeting a mid-level Premier League player, fans know better than to question the transfer guru’s judgement. And as chance would have it, that’s exactly what looks like might be about to happen over the coming months.

Liverpool seriously considering Marc Guehi signing

There are a handful of Crystal Palace players that most Liverpool supporters would be happy to see join ahead of next season.

As the Eagles showed at Anfield last month, they have some within their squad who could play at an even higher level.

Obviously, the two wide men – Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze are the most coveted. Liverpool have previously been linked with Olise and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his name crop up again.

Despite that, the Reds most pressing business appears to be nailing down a new centre-back option. And with that in mind, journalist Sami Mokbel has taken to the The Josh & Darko Show to confirm that Liverpool have ‘live’ interest in Marc Guehi.

“I think Marc Guehi is an interesting proposition for not only Liverpool but a number of top Premier League clubs,” Mokbel explained.

“Heading into the summer he’ll have two years left on his contract so this summer would be the optimum point if Crystal Palace were going to sell him.

“Unfortunately he picked up that knee injury that required surgery a few weeks ago but he’s close to returning and he’ll definitely be back before the end of the season. From what I understand that is a live option for Liverpool, I think that is one they’re taking very seriously and one they’re looking at.”

How much would Marc Guehi cost

With two years left on his contract, Palace aren’t in a hugely strong negotiating position with Guehi. As Mokbel says, now is their last chance to get maximum value from him.

There have been reports in the past that the England international would cost around £50m. In our opinion, that sounds a little steep.

There’s no question that Guehi is a really good player. Still only 23, the former Chelsea academy star now has three years of Premier League experience under his belt as well as nine caps for England. He has pedigree.

You can certainly understand why Liverpool would be interested as they look to bolster their defence.

However, we think that unless Palace are willing to climb down on that £50m valuation a fair bit, the Reds will maybe look elsewhere.
