Industrial action by train drivers and engineering work disrupts Greater Anglia rail services in May

Industrial action by train drivers and engineering work will disrupt Greater Anglia train services this month.

The most turmoil for travellers will be on Tuesday, May 7, when a full strike by ASLEF members takes place.

A very limited train service will operate only on five core Greater Anglia routes and, with the exception of the Stansted Express service, for a limited period.

Greater Anglia

Trains will run between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street approximately every two hours.

The first West Anglia line train will leave Cambridge at 8.20am and the last train will depart from the university city at 5.20pm. At London Liverpool Street, the first train is at 9.58am and the last is at 6.58pm.

There will be an hourly service between Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street with the first train from the airport at 5.50am and the last at 11.45pm. The first train leaves London Liverpool Street at 4.40am and the last departs at 11.25pm.

Greater Anglia

There will also be limited Greater Anglia services between the capital and Colchester, Norwich and Southend Victoria.

There will be no services at all on any other Greater Anglia routes. The operator says journey planners will be updated with exact train times three days before the strike.

The West Anglia line between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street, serving Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and Stansted Mountfitchet will also be affected by an overtime ban starting on Monday, May 6 and continuing on May 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Greater Anglia says a normal timetable will be in place on all its routes, but with some planned cancellations. However, on Wednesday, May 8, following the Tuesday strike, services will start later than normal with the first services on most routes beginning after 7am.

Greater Anglia's Jamie Burles

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia’s managing director, said: “Unfortunately, on Tuesday, May 7, no services will run at all on most Greater Anglia routes, with just an hourly service during normal operating hours on the Stansted Airport to London route and an hourly service for limited hours on the Norwich to London, Colchester to London and Southend Victoria to London routes, plus a few services between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street.

“On the days affected by action short of a strike, the vast majority of services will be running as normal, but there will be some alterations and cancellations across our network and train services will start later than normal on Wednesday, May 8.

“Please note that an extensive engineering works programme will also take place on Monday, May 6 and Saturday, May 11. This work is extremely important to help maintain the safe and reliable running of the railway and make it fit for the future. A rail replacement service will run while the work takes place.”

In connection with construction work for the new Cambridge South station, the West Anglia London Liverpool Street to Cambridge line will be closed between Audley End and Cambridge all day on Monday, May 6, and Saturday, May 11.

Trains from London Liverpool Street to Cambridge will start/terminate at Audley End, connecting into rail replacement bus services to/from Cambridge North. A frequent train service will operate between Cambridge North and Cambridge.
