Jeff Lynne announces ELO keyboardist Richard Tandy has died

Sadly, Jeff took to ELO’s official X/Twitter page to announce the passing of his band member and long-time friend Richard Tandy at the age of 76 on Wednesday, May 1st 2024.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy,” the ELO star wrote with sadness.

“He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila & the Tandy family.”

Before ELO formed, Richard met future bandmate and drummer Bev Bevan, one of the group’s original founding members. Richard came aboard ELO in 1972, established as a side project of the band Move, who Richard had played harpsichord for on their smash single Blackberry Way in 1968.

Although inducted into the band as a bassist, to begin with, he eventually transitioned into their keyboardist, tackling a range of instruments to help sculpt the group’s signature and singular electronic sound.

Across ELO’s grandiose career, Richard played a crucial role in their success, helping them sell more than 50 million records. They even had 27 tracks reach the Top 40 UK singles chart.

When Jeff rejoined the band in 2014, Richard was all in to make the reunion a miracle for fans. Three years later, they were inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, joining behemoth bands like AC/DC and The Who.

“Terrible loss,” a fan replied to Jeff’s heartbreaking announcement. “Condolences to you and the Tandy family… sending love, hugs, and prayers of comfort for all of you. We will cherish our memories of him as well.”

More tributes continue to come in for the beloved musician.

“He was certainly loved and appreciated by the entire Electric Light Orchestra Appreciation Society,” another reacted. “Praying now with you for Sheila and the Tandy family. Comfort and peace to you all.”

One celebrated him as a “Quiet god,” another writing “So sad, his keyboard playing on all the ELO albums was simply outstanding… rest in peace, Richard [Tandy].”

“Another one of the ELO famous 7 to go,” somebody mourned in the replies to Jeff’s tweet. “RIP Richard. Your light will shine on forever.”

Summing up who he was, a fan captured that Richard was “An amazing player and a true gent.” May he rest in peace and his music be played loud, today of all days.
