Russia was not invited to the upcoming Global Peace Summit. But it will have to participate in future sessions, according to a statement from the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland.

Over 160 delegations from around the world were invited to the Global Peace Summit. The meeting will based on discussions around the Ukrainian Peace Formula and other peace proposals. The goal of the summit is to inspire future peace processes. To achieve this, the meeting intends to:

  • provide a platform for dialogue on ways to achieve strong peace in Ukraine;
  • promote a common understanding of a possible framework to achieve this goal;
  • jointly define a roadmap on how to involve both sides in the future peace process.

Will Russia be invited?

"Russia has not been invited at this stage. Switzerland has always shown openness to extending an invitation to Russia for this Summit. However, Russia has said repeatedly and also publicly that it has no interest in participating in this first Summit. The Summit in Switzerland is intended to initiate a peace process. Switzerland is convinced thatRussia must be involved in this process. A peace process without Russia is unthinkable," says the MFA.

Global Peace Summit

The Global Peace Summit will take place on 15-16 June in Switzerland's Bürgenstock. The meeting will discuss the Ukrainian Peace Formula voiced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy back in 2022.

The head of Zelenskyy's Office, Andriy Yermak also raised the issue of inviting Russia. According to him, the country will be able to participate, but not during the first session.

As Zelenskyy previously said, Russia has a plan to disrupt the summit.
