Report: How Crystal Palace are really feeling about Dougie Freedman potentially joining Newcastle United

Newcastle United are continuing their search for a new sporting director, with Dougie Freedman now in their sights.

The Magpies are looking to find a replacement for Dan Ashworth, who is going to be taking his talents to Manchester United – as soon as compensation can be agreed between the two clubs.

That is proving to be harder than Man United anticipated, with the situation now set to go to arbitration.

In the meantime, Newcastle United are stepping up their search for a replacement. They want someone in place before the end of this month, with a looming PSR deadline of June 30th seen as incredibly important for Premier League clubs.

Newcastle step up sporting director search

That is why the Magpies are intensifying their search, with multiple candidates being interviewed for the role.

Former Tottenham and Monaco chief Paul Mitchell has been seen as the frontrunner for the job, and Geordie Boot Boys have been told that he is interested in the post at St James’ Park.

But that is not a done deal, and another name has recently entered the conversation. The Magpies are interested in Crystal Palace chief Dougie Freedman, who has assembled an exciting young team at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle fell victim to that team last week as they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace, with Eberechi Eze running the show.

He will go down as one of Freedman’s best signings, and it serves as a reminder of what he could bring to Newcastle United.

Dougie Freedman update as Newcastle hold more interviews

That is why the Magpies are keen, and iNews have provided an update on the situation regarding Newcastle United’s search for a Dan Ashworth replacement.

According to iNews, Freedman is now one of the leading candidates for the job after the club held another round of interviews last week.

They add that final interviews are due to take place very soon, with Newcastle wanting to appoint someone shortly after the conclusion of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Our final game is on May 19th, away to Brentford.

How Crystal Palace have reacted to Newcastle’s Freedman interest

Given the job he has done at Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace will not want to lose Freedman. However, it would appear they are bracing themselves for that possibility.

iNews add that Palace are taking Newcastle’s interest in Freedman very seriously and are currently looking for replacements of their own.

Whether or not that suggests that a move to Tyneside is likely remains to be seen. It would be naive of Palace not to consider who could replace Freedman. It is the same situation that Newcastle found themselves in, back when it was still hoped that Ashworth would remain at St James’ Park.

The club still did their due diligence over possible replacements, and they will now be very happy with that decision as they prepare to wave goodbye to the former FA chief.
