'I can't wait': Journalist tips Wrexham star to 'rip apart' League One after record-breaking season

Wrexham achieved promotion at the first time of asking and one of Phil Parkinson’s players has been tipped to ‘rip apart’ League One.

Wrexham ended their first season back in League Two in some style.

Phil Parkinson’s men won seven of their last eight games to secure consecutive promotions for the first time in their history.

Now, as preparations begin for their return to League One, Parkinson accepts this will be his side’s biggest jump yet and he’ll need the backing from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to bolster his squad.

A lot of work doesn’t need to be done to the starting XI as Wrexham look well equipped in defence, midfield and upfront, but they will need some strength in depth, particularly in forward positions.

Paul Mullin has carried the goal-scoring baton for the Reds in recent years however, he will need a new partner in League One to take the Liverpudlian to even greater heights.

Paul Mullin tipped to ‘rip apart’ League One

Mullin became the first player in Wrexham’s history to win a hat-trick of Player of the Year awards, claiming the accolade in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

The 29-year-old simply became unstoppable towards the end of the season following a patchy start to life back in League Two.

Parkinson’s machine fired an impressive 14 goals in his last 12 games to earn the Reds promotion while breaking the 100-goal mark for Wrexham in the process.

Mullin has been simply phenomenal for the Welsh outfit and deservedly won the prestigious award, despite many believing Andy Cannon should have got his hands on it.

Now braced to take League One by storm, the Athletic journalist Richard Sutcliffe has tipped him to ‘rip apart’ the division.

Speaking on the Rob Ryan Red podcast, Sutcliffe said: “You look at how he finished the season, I can’t wait to see him in League One, I cannot wait because I think he’s going to rip it apart.

“And this is a guy who has not played there really; he had a little spell at Tranmere when he was basically on the bench but he’ll have so much to prove and that is when he’s at his best. He’s got that chippiness about him which good footballers have got to because they want to prove people wrong.”

Paul Mullin’s League One record

For a striker of Mullin’s calibre, it’s surprising that he hasn’t played higher than League One level and on the only occasion he did, his time at Tranmere Rovers was pretty forgettable.

Mullin started just nine of his 20 appearances for the Superwhites, scoring just three times and failing to live up to expectations.

Now, the experienced talisman is returning to the third tier as the best version of himself and working under a manager who knows him like the back of his hand.

Indeed, it would be a huge surprise if Mullin didn’t continue his goal-scoring exploits in League One next season as McElhenney and Reynolds target promotion.
