Film star gives up being a vegetarian after 38 years over health concerns

English actor Martin Freeman has decided to ditch being a vegetarian after shy of four decades due to “processed” meat alternatives.

Martin Freeman helped the world’s greatest detective solve crimes as John Watson in the TV series Sherlock, he accompanied dwarves on the adventure of a lifetime as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit movies, and he did it all without eating meat. The 52-year-old star of the big and small screen has been a vegetarian ever since he was a teenager. And yet, he’s decided to ditch the lifestyle in favor of meat after a long 38 years.

Martin Freeman cites ‘processed’ meat alternatives as reason he’s ditched being a vegetarian

Having lived as a vegetarian for almost forty years, it raises the question of why you’d pivot from a lifestyle you’ve known for the majority of your life.

Well, Martin was willing to share his reasons while speaking on the Dish podcast with co-hosts Nick Grimshaw and professional chef Angela Hartnett.

The three were sharing a delicious bolognese, prompting the actor to confess his recent change of diet. “I’ve come off being a vegetarian,” he began. “I started being a vegetarian in like January 1986. Because I was never really, I was never comfortable with the idea of eating animals. So I’ve not had a really good bolognese since then – my mum was a pretty good cook.”

Opening up about what motivated him to ditch the plant-based approach to cooking, he said he has “always had veggie stuff – it’s really lovely. But I always had veggie sort of replacements and stuff… It’s a funny one, because I like meat replacement things, but my reservation about them is that they can be very, very processed and I’m trying to eat less processed food.”

Martin reveals his unconventional pick for ‘food of the gods’

Admitting he’s missed tucking into “good, honest staple” types of food, such as the bolognese, he was then asked what treats he’s been enjoying since embracing a broad approach to food.

“Scotch egg was one of the things, I thought, ‘It’s a free country, I can do what I like,'” he explained. “And also, do you know the other thing – a pork pie with the jelly and all that s**t. A bit of mustard on a pork pie – oh man. It’s food of the gods.”

The vegetarians out there are sure to be disheartened by Martin’s sudden change. The Daily Mail reports a study found plant-based meat products don’t offer a ‘clear benefit’ for heart health.

Perhaps such a study was the catalyst for Martin to change his ways, and perhaps the pork pies ultimately became far too much of a temptation. As an actor who has been in possession of the ‘One Ring’ while venturing Middle Earth, temptation is something he’ll know too well.
