Liverpool like the idea of signing ‘special’ Fulham player on a free transfer this summer

Michael Edwards has never been afraid to go bold when it comes to signing players for Liverpool.

FSG’s new CEO of football has become one of the most well-respected talent spotters in the game off the back of some unexpectedly successful deals with the Reds.

Now back at Anfield and in a position of more power, Liverpool fans are expecting more of the same from Edwards this summer.

So far, we’ve seen suggestions that the Reds will target two positions in particular. Fabrizio Romano claimed that central defence is Liverpool’s priority, while David Ornstein reported that a wide forward will also be on the agenda.

There have already been rumblings about who could be signed to fill both positions. Marc Guehi is the latest to put forward as a potential new centre-back. And now another Premier League name has been mentioned alongside Guehi.

Liverpool in the mix for Tosin Adarabioyo

What we know about Edwards is that he will look at a data-driven approach and will not pay over what he feels is a fair price.

Rather than gambling on big names that may or may not work out, the transfer guru likes to explore every avenue to ensure new signings will fit in with Liverpool’s first-team squad.

And according to The Daily Mail, Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo looks like he might tick every box for the Reds.

They claim that Tosin’s age, experience and the fact that he won’t cost a penny make him ‘attractive’ for a number of clubs, including Liverpool.

The 26-year-old had reportedly been in negotiations with Fulham over a new contract, but an agreement could not be reached.

As a result, it’s claimed that Tosin is certain to leave Craven Cottage and will even be left out of Fulham’s remaining Premier League fixtures. Newcastle, AC Milan and Man United are other clubs named as being potentially interested.

Where would Tosin fit in at Liverpool

Although Tosin would be a cost-effective potential fix for Liverpool’s centre-back issues, we just can’t see this one happening.

Had the former Man City man been two or three years younger, then he’d certainly be one to look at more closely. But when has Edwards ever been keen on signing anyone over the age of 25?

Tosin actually turns 27 just a month into the new season. This of course wouldn’t discount him from being a good signing for Liverpool, far from it. Manager Marco Silva called him ‘special’ this season [bein SPORTS], he’s a fine player. But we just don’t believe he’s what the Reds need.

Instead, Liverpool should be targeting a younger, up-and-coming defender who can potentially take over from Virgil van Dijk in a year or two. Tosin could be a good squad player, but he’s never going to do that.

There is perhaps an argument that Liverpool actually do need a squad player right now, and should wait and see what happens with Van Dijk before bringing in an heir. While that might be true, we’d rather take a chance on Sepp van den Berg than bring in the Fulham man.
