Ryan Gosling reveals actor Burt Reynolds fancied his mom

Although Ryan has come a long way, he was humble enough to reflect on his career beginnings during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The actor’s first ever movie role came in the 1996 sci-fi horror Frankenstein And Me, in which he co-starred with legendary actor Burt Reynolds, cherished for roles in the likes of Smokey And The Bandit and Boogie Nights.

Sadly, Burt passed away at 82 back in 2018, but Ryan has quite the story to remember him by.

“It’s complicated,’ Ryan reminisced about the experience of shooting the film when he was roughly 13. “Because I thought he took a shine to me. I thought he thought there was something special about me. And then I realized that I have a very beautiful mom.”

When Jimmy pressed Ryan about what happened with Burt and his mom Donna, he went on. “He was just kind of interested,” he recalled. “It was like I was getting like a secondary shine. The real shine was for my mom. And I was like, ”Oh, this is secondary shine.'”

Asked how long it took him to figure it out, Ryan needn’t have said any more than this: “I wish I had found out sooner.”

Ryan jokes he told co-star to ‘stop looking’ at his mom

Not that Donna was at all offended or put off by Burt’s keen interest. When Jimmy asked if his mom was flattered, Ryan replied “My god, she loved it, are you kidding me?”

Ryan recalls the experience on set was a good one with Burt. “He was being friendly,” he remembered. “He would sign stuff all the time. He signed a Mean Machine t-shirt.”

What Burt told him and the kids, however, is this: don’t see Deliverance. “Which of course is the first thing we did,” Ryan said of seeking out the grisly ’70s thriller that Burt starred in.

He gave them all plenty of advice during the shoot, but Ryan suggests the way Burt delivered his advice may have gone over his head somewhat. Nevertheless, he had something to say to Burt himself, as it turns out… “‘Stop looking at my mom. I’m right here,'” he recalls saying with a laugh.

The Fall Guy is in theaters from Friday, May 3rd 2024.
