Ben Foster says £51m Man City star doesn't need to be a 'world-class' player

Ben Foster has said that one Manchester City player doesn’t need to be world-class to be effective for the team.

At this stage of the season, the Blues only have four games left to play before their latest Premier League campaign comes to an end.

Having played 34 league games, the Citizens have won 24, drawn seven and lost three, scoring 82 goals and conceding 32, leaving them just one point behind Arsenal at the top of the table with a game in hand.

With the Manchester club having the possibility of winning another league title, one figure in Pep Guardiola’s side, who has played a big role in getting the team involved in another title race, has found himself being the topic of discussion.

Speaking in a recent video shared on the Premier League YouTube channel, Foster was tasked with building a team with young players from the top flight.

When picking a striker for his side, Foster had this to say about Erling Haaland and his efforts this season.

He said: “The player that is top of the Premier League scoring charts has been good this season, he has been good this season.

“I don’t need him to be a world-class player, I really don’t, I need him to put the ball in the back of the net and I know that is exactly what I’m going to get from my big man up top.”

Erling Haaland has had another impressive goalscoring season at Man City

Since arriving at the Manchester club from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £51m during the 2022 summer transfer window, Haaland has scored 84 goals in 93 games across all competitions.

21 of those goals have come throughout the 27 Premier League appearances he’s made for City in this current campaign.

In fact, having racked up the joint-second-highest number of shots on target (44) in the division, the 23-year-old has the second-highest rate of shots on target per 90 minutes (1.79).

With the striker having had some criticism put his way regarding his general play outside of the penalty box, it’s nice to hear from Foster that he doesn’t think Haaland has to be at an elite level in every aspect of the game as long as he keeps scoring goals.
