East Lansing, Mich. – Just over one year after his initial commitment to Michigan State, offensive lineman Andrew Dennis has rejoined the Spartan program. Dennis, who spent the spring at Illinois, announced on Thursday that he will transfer to Michigan State.

Dennis (6-5, 290) first committed to Mel Tucker’s Spartan program on April 8, 2023. The in-state product spent just over six months as one of Michigan State’s highest-ranked 2024 commits before he reopened his recruitment in October.

Dennis’ decommitment came nearly three weeks after Tucker’s firing on Sept. 27, 2023.

Dennis visited the likes of Penn State and Clemson before announcing his commitment to Illinois on Nov. 27, 2023. He spent the spring in Champaign, but entered the transfer portal on Monday.

It didn’t take long for new Spartan head coach Jonathan Smith and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik to recruit Dennis back to Michigan State. The Spartan staff hosted Dennis in East Lansing on Thursday, sources tell SpartanMag.

A former four-star recruit out of Mount Pleasant (Mich.) High School, Dennis was the No. 226 player in the 2024 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also the No. 14 interior offensive lineman and No. 4 player from Michigan in his class.

Dennis’ commitment comes two days after Michigan State lost two starting offensive linemen in Geno VanDeMark and Ethan Boyd to the portal. Boyd committed to Colorado on Thursday.

Dennis figures to slide into a reserve role at offensive guard during his first season in East Lansing. Michigan State returns redshirt sophomores Gavin Broscious and Kristian Phillips at guard. The Spartans also have redshirt freshman Cole Dellinger and true freshman Charlton Luniewski in the room. True freshman Rakeem Johnson will join the team this summer.

Tanner Miller and Dallas Fincher, Michigan State’s projected first- and second-string centers, respectively, can also play guard. They figure to remain at center, however.

Dennis represents Michigan State’s fourth portal acquisition of the spring, joining former UMass running back Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams, former Indiana defensive end Anthony Jones and former Arizona State cornerback Ed Woods.
