Exclusive: Tottenham close to agreeing new contract with £22m Pochettino signing

  • Exclusive with Graeme Bailey

Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son is keen to finalise a new contract with the club, TBR Football understands.

Son, who turns 32 this summer, has just over 12-months left on his current deal but there is also an option which TBR Football understands the club have indicated they will use – if a new deal is not agreed.

Son has been one of the top players for Tottenham this season after taking the captaincy from Harry Kane in the summer.

Once again, the South Korean has shown his worth to Tottenham with 25 goal contributions and TBR Football now understands he could be sticking around a lot longer.

Tottenham hopeful of finalising new contract for Heung-Min Son

Sources have confirmed that Son’s representatives held talks with Tottenham’s top-brass last year and talks are expected to progress this summer. Son was named new Spurs captain last summer by Ange Postecoglou following the exits of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.

Son has become an integral part of Postecoglou’s side – contributing 16 goals and nine assists, often playing in a more central role. There is some interest in Son from the Saudi Pro League – which emerged first emerged last summer and TBR understands that still exists, but sources close to the club firmly believe a new deal is in the works should be finalised over the summer.

Tottenham have to get this one sorted

Spurs don’t have many players who you can directly say are world-class but Heung-Min Son is one player who does fit into that category.

After signing for £22m in 2015 when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge, Son has gone on to become something of a legend for the club.

Commercially, too, Son is massive for the club given the pull he has out in the Far East and the merchandise sales he can generate.

On the pitch, though, is what matters and Son fully deserves a new deal with the club.

Tottenham, then, have to get this one sorted ASAP and then simply build around Son from there this summer.
