Man Utd legend Paul Scholes named one of ‘best-ever midfielders’ and ‘loved watching’ him play, he was in awe

Former Manchester United and England star Paul Scholes has named one of the “best-ever midfielders” after he admitted that he “loved” watching him play.

Paul Scholes is widely considered one of the best Premier League midfielders of all time after a legendary playing career at Manchester United.

The 49-year-old United legend broke into the first team under Sir Alex Ferguson and was one of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ members who made a big impact at Old Trafford.

Scholes spent his entire club playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson, who named the former midfielder as one of the four world-class players he managed in his career.

The footballer-turned-pundit made a whopping 716 appearances and scored 155 times and registered 81 assists across his two spells at United.

During his illustrious career at United, Scholes lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

The former Oldham Athletic boss ended his legendary playing career for the second – and final – time in 2013 after United’s last Premier League title triumph.

Scholes talks one of the ‘best-ever’ midfielders

Paul Scholes was a linchpin figure in the heart of midfield for Manchester United’s legendary teams of the past under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former England international is thought of highly for his world-class talent, including how he made Ferguson’s teams tick with his natural ability.

Scholes shared the centre of the pitch alongside different United legends, including Roy Keane and Michael Carrick.

The United legend also emerged on the scene at Old Trafford in the 1990s when legendary former club captain Bryan Robson was playing under Ferguson.

Bryan Robson, who remains United’s longest-serving captain to date, was widely revered for his incredible leadership and his ability as a midfielder.

Scholes previously sat down with United Review and built his ‘ultimate’ XI, with the ex-Three Lions midfielder naming Robson in midfield alongside Roy Keane.

The United legend raved about the influence that Robson had on him when he was younger, along with calling ‘Captain Marvel’ one of the “best-ever midfielders.”

“I loved watching Bryan when I was younger; he’s one of the best-ever midfielders,” Scholes said in 2009, as per Manchester United’s official website.

Ferguson hailed Robson’s impact at Man Utd

Robson was already captain at United before Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford from Aberdeen and replaced Ron Atkinson as Red Devils manager.

The 67-year-old former United captain remained an important figure under Ferguson until his departure from the Premier League club in 1994.

Ferguson hailed the influence that Robson had at Old Trafford during his reign and said that he was the best captain he had at United ahead of Keane.

“Well, he was easily the best captain I had,” he said in 2021.

“I think over the period he was at United, he was the best player.”
