At least 11 killed, 26 injured as Congo refugee camps shelled

At least 11 people have been killed and 26 others seriously injured after four refugee camps were shelled in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The head of the camps, Moïse Ngayabarenzi, told dpa that the Lushagala, Elohim, Rego and Cepac shelters in Mugunga near the eastern city of Goma came under attack on Friday.

A spokesman for the Congolese armed forces in the province of North Kivu said fighters from the M23 militia fired on the refugee camps after the army destroyed a rebel weapon and ammunition depot on Friday morning. M23 rejected the accusations.

Ngayabarenzi said the shelling of the camps was followed by an uprising by residents who barricaded streets. Soldiers intervened to restore order, and a woman and a child were reportedly shot dead in the process.

More than 250,000 people have fled the fighting between M23 and the Congolese government since December.

Kinshasa accuses neighbouring Rwanda of supporting the rebel group, which controls large parts of resource-rich North Kivu including valuable coltan mines. Rwanda has denied aiding M23.

More than 100 militias are currently active in eastern Congo.
