Jamie Carragher says there's one thing Tottenham 'have to improve' next season and it's on Postecoglou

Tottenham suffered another poor defeat last night and Jamie Carragher believes there’s one major element of their performances that needs to improve.

Chelsea scored twice to see off Tottenham and the performance overall was one that left managerAnge Postecoglou fuming during and after the game.

The top four is now looking more and more unlikely as Aston Villa keep up their good form and going into next season, Postecoglou has work to do.

Of course, new signings will arrive in the summer and that should help strengthen the squad.

However, speaking about Tottenham and their way of defending, Jamie Carragher has suggested Postecoglou needs to change something next term.

Jamie Carragher names the one thing Tottenham have to change next season

Speaking about Tottenham and their defence on the Echo of Glory podcast, Carragher believes the defence as a whole simply has to improve next season.

“I think there’s a lot to improve, certainly defensively. When you look at the defensive record, and the strange thing about your defensive record is you would probably say all your defenders have played pretty well,” Carragher said.

“You are probably happy with your two full-backs, you are probably happy with Van de Ven who has come in at the back, Romero is a World Cup winner, but you still have a really poor defensive record. So, that probably tells you it is more about the set-up of the team and maybe the make-up of the team higher up the pitch. That will have to improve next season.”

Postecoglou has to look at things differently next season

The Aussie has had plenty of praise this season and there was a time when it looked like Tottenham might end up challenging for the title.

But, alas, they have fallen away as they so often do and ultimately, that is on the manager to sort out.

Carragher makes an interesting point here about the defenders looking like they’re playing well on a weekly basis. But at the end of the day, they still concede too many goals.

Spurs have shipped 54 goals this season and really, that cannot happen if you want to be comfortably in the top four.

The summer, then, needs a lot of work on the training pitch to get this right.
