Latvia wants to expand sanctions against the Russian Federation and has proposed that the European Union ban the supply of manganese ore and aluminum oxide, according to the Minister of Finance Arvils Ašeradens.

According to the Minister, the EU countries will soon hold consultations to approve the sanctions package against Russia as soon as possible.

In particular, in April, Latvia proposed adding a ban on the export and transit of manganese ore and aluminum oxide to the sanctions. These raw materials can be used in Russian military production.

At the time, the Latvian Foreign Ministry noted that the country considers such an EU-level decision to be the most effective tool for limiting the flow of goods and, consequently, reducing Russia's potential in a war with Ukraine.

EU sanctions against Russia

Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, EU countries have been imposing sanctions on the aggressor.

The 14th package of sanctions is to be announced soon. Latvia proposes to add a ban on the export of manganese ore to this package.
