‘He thinks’: Journalist shares what people from Celtic have told him about Ange Postecoglou and set-pieces

Set-pieces have been the big talking point at Tottenham over the past two weeks.

Goals from dead balls cost Spurs in the north London derby last weekend, while Chelsea undid Spurs with two goals from dead balls on Thursday.

Ange Postecoglou has been incredibly stubborn on this front, claiming that he doesn’t want to do any extra work on set plays.

Speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, Tom Allnutt has been discussing how Postecoglou views set-pieces, and he says that the Australian believes this is a personnel issue rather than a tactical problem.

How Ange Postecoglou views set pieces

Allnutt shared what he’s heard from people at Celtic.

“I personally think, and I spoke to a couple of people who know him well from his time at Celtic, he thinks set-pieces are a personnel issue,” Allnutt said.

“He thinks they live and die by players who attack the ball well and are aggressive and in terms of delivery.

“He thinks a good team who are good at set-pieces, he believes it’s all about personnel and he believes they will sign a couple of players in the summer who have the height and the aggression to make a difference.”

Ange Postecoglou may be right

There have been plenty of arguments around why Tottenham have struggled from set-plays as of late, but it may be as simple as a personnel issue.

The two centre-backs aside, Tottenham have an incredibly short squad who aren’t great in the air.

No matter how Postecoglou or his coaches set this team up, they would probably struggle against bigger and stronger players.

As much as some people love to talk about tactics and set-play plans, sometimes it is a simple as a bigger and stronger player will win a header against someone smaller and weaker.
