Phil Hay shares how Leeds United fans reacted to the players at full-time of Southampton defeat today

Leeds United have unfortunately had to settle for a place in the Championship play-offs.

The Whites headed into the final day needing a miracle to finish in second place ahead of Ipswich Town, and in truth, they never got close to achieving it.

Ipswich Town only had to avoid defeat against an already relegated Huddersfield Town side and did so comfortably, sweeping them aside 2-0 at Portman Road.

Leeds, meanwhile, looked second best for a lot of this afternoon’s clash with Southampton at Elland Road, and so fell to a second consecutive home defeat with a score of 2-1.

Farke’s side will now need to get themselves over the disappointment of recent weeks and prepare for a semi-final.

Hay shares how Leeds fans reacted at full-time

It would be fair to say Leeds fans across social media are not overly confident on their side’s chances of promotion heading into the play-offs.

Martin O’Neill also believes Farke now has a massive job on his hands getting Leeds back on track again, after losing out on the top two in such a frustrating manner.

However, according to Phil Hay, Leeds fans in the ground at full-time are still right behind their team ahead of a massive few weeks.

Hay reported that in Leeds’ post-match lap of the pitch, supporters were trying extremely hard to show their appreciation and fire the players up once again.

The dressing room will undoubtedly be feeling gutted right now and so that sort of reception should hopefully do absolute wonders for their confidence levels ahead of next week.

Who are Leeds facing in the play-off semi-finals?

Heading into the weekend, Leeds had looked destined to be facing Marcelo Bielsa’s former assistant Carlos Corberan and his West Brom side.

West Brom took four points from Leeds in the regular season but after their 3-0 win over Preston North End, that is no longer the case.

Instead, Farke will be making a second return of the season to his old side Norwich City, who lost 1-0 at Birmingham City to relinquish fifth place.

Leeds did the league double over Norwich and a similar set of results would earn them a trip to Wembley for the first time since 2008.
