'Get him firing': Arne Slot told he simply has to get more out of one Liverpool player than Jurgen Klopp has

Liverpool will be hoping that they can continue their rebuild this season under Arne Slot.

Although the Reds have ultimately come up short in the Premier League and Europa League, there have still be plenty of positives this year.

For starters, Liverpool are guaranteed to be back in the Champions League in 2024/25. They’ll likely finish in third place and also bagged themselves a trophy. Much better than last season.

On top of that though, there are plenty of signs within the squad that further improvements can be made. Alexis Mac Allister, for example, had a ‘stunning’ first season according to Stan Collymore and more can be expected of both he and Dominik Szoboszlai next year.

Others within the first-team will also naturally get better. Meanwhile youngsters like Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley will be another year older and wiser. As well as all of this, Slot can still get more out of certain players, with former striker Glenn Murray highlighting one in particular.

Arne Slot looking for Darwin Nunez improvement

Across the board, you’d argue that Liverpool players have been better than they were last season.

The two exception may be Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah. The pair were comfortably the Reds’ best in 2023/24, but have had seasons disrupted by injury this time.

One who has perhaps shown the biggest improvement is Darwin Nunez. Although he’s been struggling a lot recently, Nunez has had a much better campaign on the whole.

Despite that though, the 24-year-old can still make adjustments and betterments to his game. There’s another level or two to be found.

And speaking on BBC 5 Live (03/05 7.42pm) on Friday night, Murray claimed that instead of going out and spending big on a replacement for Nunez, Slot needs to get more out of him than Jurgen Klopp has been doing.

“For me, get Nunez firing,” said the former Crystal Palace striker. “Like Charlie (Adam) said, if they can’t go and get a number 9 and they don’t like spending big money, even though they did push the boat out, for Nunez, he (Arne Slot) needs to get more out of him, definitely on a more consistent basis.”

Will Liverpool look to sell Darwin Nunez

There are some out there who will have lost patience with Nunez at Liverpool. Some of his recent misses have been inexcusable and incredibly costly.

Had these been one off’s from the Uruguayan then you could accept them a little more readily. But the truth is that he’s been squandering big chances ever since he arrived at Anfield in 2022.

However, despite his failures in front of goal, journalist David Ornstein has claimed that Nunez is unlikely to be sold this summer.

There is a bit of a feeling of it being last chance saloon for Darwin. But if Slot can get him firing then Liverpool could end up having one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.

All the tools are there for the former Benfica man. Let’s hope that Slot can be the man to unlock that potential.
