German far-right AfD legislator attacked with eggs at info stand

A legislator with Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was attacked with eggs at an information stand in Nordhorn in the north central state of Lower Saxony on Saturday, police said.

A 29-year-old man initially passed the AfD stand with a woman in tow and both threw eggs in the direction of the stand and the lawmaker, according to a police statement. The eggs initially missed their target.

Around half an hour later, the two people returned wearing masks.

The 29-year-old man from Nordhorn aimed another egg at the same target and hit the politician on the head.

When the latter tried to confront the assailant, the 29-year-old insulted the politician and hit him in the face. The AfD politician sustained minor injuries.

The police did not name the politician involved, who is with the AfD and is a member of Lower Saxony's regional parliament.

"The 29-year-old will be charged with dangerous bodily harm and insulting behaviour," a police spokeswoman told dpa.

The identity of his female companion was initially unknown.
