'Slippery player': Chris Sutton blown away by 'tricky' £20m Newcastle star today

Newcastle United moved back into sixth place in the Premier League on Saturday.

Despite another reasonably poor start at Burnley, Eddie Howe’s side ran out comfortable 4-1 winners at Turf Moor.

It means Newcastle have moved ahead of Manchester United in the battle for Europa League qualification, albeit both they and Chelsea still have games in hand.

Still, Howe’s side can only focus on what they’re doing in the Premier League and they managed to romp to a big win again, albeit losing the clean sheet late on was frustrating.

At last, the Toon boss had options on the bench. Joelinton, Nick Pope, Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron were all on there, as well as the in-form Elliot Anderson.

Howe now has a host of key players available for the run-in and one of those is undoubtedly Callum Wilson.

The striker recently made his comeback from injury and even scored against Sheffield United before bagging against the Clarets, moving ahead of the legendary Peter Beardsley as the club’s second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League era.

Such was his impact in Lancashire, pundit Chris Sutton was impressed.

Chris Sutton seriously impressed by ‘slippery’ Newcastle star vs Burnley

Speaking about the forward’s outing against Burnley, Sutton told BBC Radio Five Live at 16.30pm BST on 04/05/2024: “How good has Callum Wilson been? He’s just skinned Ekdal, rolled him and Ekdal fouls him. He’s a slippery player, Wilson is very tricky to play against.”

Callum Wilson has written himself into the record books at Newcastle

Sadly, it seems as if Wilson is destined to leave Newcastle this summer.

He was reportedly blocked a January move away and his agents are said to be looking for a new club this summer.

Though the constant injuries have been hugely frustrating, there is little doubt Wilson has been a good signing at £20m.

Only Alan Shearer has scored more goals in the Premier League for Newcastle, after all.

If he is to leave, he can go having written himself into the record books.
