'Really consistent': Chris Sutton says 'solid' £13m Newcastle star hardly puts a foot wrong

Newcastle United almost managed only a third clean sheet in eight games at Burnley.

Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side were cruising to a big victory at Turf Moor without a blotch on their copybook when Dara O’Shea’s late header gave the hosts at least some consolation.

Clearly, that isn’t the biggest deal in the world for Newcastle, who still managed to move back into the Premier League’s top six thanks to a 4-1 win.

While both Manchester United and Chelsea still have games in hand in the pursuit of Europa League qualification, Newcastle are looking good for yet more European football next season.

Performances aren’t the most important thing in the world during the run-in. It’s all about results at this stage of the season, digging deep to get over the line.

Howe needs his warriors doing the business and pundit Chris Sutton was impressed with one of them.

The former England striker paid special mention to one Dan Burn for his outing at Turf Moor.

The £13m defender has endured a difficult season, despite Howe’s very public backing of him.

Thankfully, Burn now looks through the very worst of his form and did enough to impress Sutton – who was speaking to BBC Radio Five Live at 16.41 BST on 04/05/2024.

“Dan Burn has been pretty solid for Newcastle once again, he has been a really consistent performer for them,” he said.

How well did Dan Burn play for Newcastle against Burnley?

With Fabian Schar potentially missing the rest of the season and Newcastle already without both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles for the foreseeable future, a lot will fall on Burn at the back.

Thankfully, the 31-year-old was in imperious form against Burnley.

According to WhoScored, he won the highest number of aerial duels (3) in the Newcastle ranks and also finished third for tackles in the game (3). Only Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, meanwhile, managed more than Burn’s two interceptions.

It’s not been an easy season for Burn but he looks like he’s set to finish strongly.
