Bukayo Saka achieved one thing no Arsenal player has in 37 years in win over Bournemouth

Arsenal secured an important victory over Bournemouth to keep their title hopes alive, and continued their impressive form in 2024.

Goals from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice helped Arsenal to what became a comfortable victory despite some nervy moments and controversial refereeing decisions, and Rice was yet again the standout performer.

Saka also performed well despite suffering a brutal tackle from Ryan Christie early on which surprisingly went unpunished, but he had the last laugh as he converted a penalty at the end of the first half to give Arsenal the lead.

His goal was a significant one, as it meant that the Arsenal talisman has now broken a club Premier League record, which has otherwise stood for 37 years, in what has been a landmark campaign for the 22-year-old.

Bukayo Saka breaks Arsenal Premier League goalscoring record

Saka’s goal was his 20th in all competitions this season, and at just 22 years of age, he has now become the youngest-ever Arsenal player to score 20 goals across all competitions in Premier League history.

The winger is the first Arsenal player to achieve such a feat since Martin Hayes, who was 21 years and 30 days old when he scored 24 times in all competitions in the 1986-87 season.

Saka, at 22 years and 242 days, is slightly older than Hayes was when he achieved the remarkable feat 37 years ago, but given that 12 of Hayes’ goals, were penalties, a rate of 50%, Saka’s is arguably more impressive, with six of his 20, at a rate of 30%, of his strikes coming from the spot.

Arsenal have had some talented young players within their ranks over the years, with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere becoming first-team players at a young age.

However, none of them could achieve the feat Saka has just managed, and the England winger also has 14 assists to his name this season.

Saka has also delivered this campaign with Arsenal challenging Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side in the Premier League title race, and it is arguable that this campaign is more impressive than anything other Arsenal young stars have managed in the Premier League era.

The England International is now one of the best attackers in the Premier League, and he has fully established himself as Arsenal’s talisman under Mikel Arteta.
