'I'll do everything': Eddie Howe confirms he won't let 'slippery' player leave Newcastle easily this summer

Newcastle United’s season is very much alive.

At times during this most turbulent of campaigns, it has seemed as if Newcastle’s attempts to qualify for Europe again would fizzle out.

However, Saturday’s big win over Burnley in the Premier League puts Eddie Howe’s side back into the top six.

Clearly, they have a fight on their hands with Manchester United and Chelsea in that respect but Newcastle are in a great position with only three games left.

Still, the looming summer transfer window is hard to ignore.

There is reportedly hope of a big rebuild at St James’ Park this summer, albeit the financial balancing act FFP limitations require means that players could leave.

One of those is Callum Wilson. The striker’s agents are even said to be looking at potential landing spots already.

However, Howe has been clear in his stance over the forward, who scored against the Clarets.

In fact, his performance was so good that pundit Chris Sutton hailed the “slippery” Wilson as a “tricky” player to play against.

Eddie Howe says he will do everything he can to keep ‘slippery’ Newcastle star

Speaking after Saturday’s win, Howe said of Wilson’s future (via Chris Waugh on X, formerly Twitter): “Of course I want him at the club next season. I’ll do everything I can to make it happen.”

Callum Wilson would be a good player to sell for Newcastle

In an ideal world, Newcastle would be able to keep Wilson. Despite all of the injuries, he remains a prolific goalscorer at Premier League level.

Still, with only a year left on his contract by the time the season finishes and already at the age of 32 with a lengthy injury record, this summer represents the last time Newcastle can realistically hope to extract anything close to maximum value for Wilson.

Only Alan Shearer has scored more Premier League goals for Newcastle than Wilson. He can leave with his head held high.
