'Wow': Jamie Carragher says David Silva would have loved what Man City star did in 69th minute v Wolves

Manchester City ran out comfortable winners against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday – and Jamie Carragher believes David Silva would have loved what one City player did in the game.

Erling Haaland scored four goals in a 5-1 win for the hosts, who kept up the pressure on Arsenal after they had won earlier in the day against Bournemouth.

Haaland scored twice from the penalty spot and also bagged a brilliant header and finish with his left foot in the second-half.

Julian Alvarez also got on the scoresheet late on, and City now look ahead to their next game against Fulham.

There was no goal for Phil Foden against Wolves, but it was another top-drawer display from the England international.

Fresh from being named the FWA Footballer of the Year, Foden was superb against Wanderers and finished the game with one assist to his name. But there was a particularly brilliant moment from him in the second-half, which Jamie Carragher reckons David Silva would have loved…

After missing out against Nottingham Forest through illness, Foden was back starting again for Manchester City against Wolves on Saturday.

The 23-year-old could not add to his 24 goals for the season against Wanderers, but it was a typically impactful performance from Foden, who regularly found space between the lines. This was something Wolves didn’t really slow in the reverse fixture at Molineux.

Foden had much more joy this time around, and his assist for Haaland was fantastic.

But there was a moment in the 69th minute of the game that prompted gasps from the crowd. He received the ball on the halfway line from Josko Gvardiol, and had Nelson Semedo pressing him from behind.

Quick as a flash, Foden knocked the ball round him with one touch, and then pushed the ball beyond Semedo and Joao Gomes who had arrived to help his teammate. Foden then scampered forward and then sent in a cross to the back post, with Haaland attempting a bicycle kick. It was just taken off him by Toti Gomes.

Speaking on commentary on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher said: “Wow, Phil Foden. That’s your footballer of the year there!

“Initially when he got that ball on the turn and danced away from players… the first touch, the control, getting away from players, and then that cross. What a goal that would have been.

“Sure David Silva would have appreciated that piece of play there from Phil Foden. He was the master.”

David Silva must be proud of Foden

It was another top display from Foden yesterday against Wolves, and it came in front of the legend David Silva, who was in attendance for the game.

Foden – who Pep said earlier this week has just been getting better and better – has long said that Silva was one of his heroes coming through at City, and the Spaniard will surely be very proud to see how far his former teammate has come.

You can clearly see the influence that the Spaniard has had on Foden, whose technical ability now is one of the best in the game today. His control of the ball and balance are exceptional, just as David Silva’s were.

As Carragher says, he would surely have appreciated that bit of play in the 69th minute against Wolves.
