Lionel Messi breaks another MLS record as Inter Miami smash New York Red Bulls 6-2

Lionel Messi last night broke yet another MLS record as Inter Miami smashed the New York Red Bulls 6-2 thanks to the Argentine forward.

Fresh off becoming the first player in MLS history to make multiple goal contributions across five consecutive league games, Messi was highly expected to keep this record alive on Saturday at Chase Stadium.

With Inter Miami on a three-game winning streak, the Herons were in ideal form to take on the New York Red Bulls, who earlier in the season thrashed the Florida franchise 4-0 in New Jersey.

Yet last night saw Inter Miami take their revenge in a big way, and for Messi, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder did it in record-breaking fashion to once again steal headlines.

Messi makes five assists in 6-2 Inter Miami win vs New York Red Bulls

As per MLS’s official website, Messi broke not one but two records in Florida last night as the 36-year-old forward became the first player to assist five goals in a league match as well as record the most goal contributions in a single game with six.

With Messi already in double digits for goals and assists in MLS after playing just eight games, it’s pretty clear that the Argentine is on course to win the league’s MVP award, something Taylor Twellman already predicted last week.

And last night’s performance was easily Messi’s best yet in MLS, with the display coming a week after similar claims were made after the attacker’s display in Massachusetts against the New England Revolution.

Indeed, words are beginning to fail us when it comes to describing Messi, and the former PSG and FC Barcelona star is showing right now why he is simply the best to ever play the game.

Messi on course to break every record in MLS

When Messi signed for Inter Miami last summer, there was always a small chance that the Argentine would hit MLS like a duck to water and break every record in the book during his time in America.

And after last night’s performance, there’s a chance that Messi could actually do just that, with the goal contribution record in MLS well within sight after last night’s insane showing against the Red Bulls.

Messi will want to leave his mark in MLS, and this season could see that attacker do just that by ripping out the record book and leaving his imprint on the league.
