Michigan transfer portal: Wolverines show interest in cornerback, special teamer

Michigan Wolverines footballis looking to add to its roster with talent from the NCAA transfer portal, and a new cornerback target has emerged. According to The Wolverine sources, the Maize and Blue have shown interest in Texas transfer Terrance Brooks.

The 6-foot, 200-pounder played two seasons with the Longhorns and has two years of eligibility remaining. Brooks is the No. 8 overall player and second-best cornerback that’s available in the transfer portal, according to On3’s rankings.

Brooks is coming off a standout season for the Longhorns, which earned him an honorable mention All-Big 12 nod. He played in 14 outings with 13 starts, totaling 20 tackles, tying for the team’s lead with 3 interceptions and adding 6 pass breakups.

The Little Elm, Texas, native posted a 60.9 PFF coverage grade, which ranked 40th in the Big 12 among cornerbacks with 120 or more coverage snaps. He allowed 20 receptions for 352 yards and 2 touchdowns on 45 targets. His 81.3 tackling rating ranked second on the Texas defense.

Despite possessing an elite defensive line, the weakness of the Texas defense was against the pass, allowing 7.1 yards per throw (tied 53rd nationally) and 254.4 passing yards per game (116th).

The Michigan transfer target opened three of his nine appearances as a freshman in 2022, totaling 9 tackles and 3 pass breakups.

A Little Elm (Texas) High product, Brooks was a four-star recruit and the nation’s No. 56 overall player in the 2022 class, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the seventh-best cornerback in the country and ninth-best prospect in Texas.

Texas plays at Michigan Sept. 7.

Michigan reaches out to return man Blake Hester

Sources tell The Wolverinethat Michigan special teams coordinator J.B. Brownhas showed interest in Akron running back Blake Hester, a return specialist who handled kicks for the Zips last season. Sources say that Michigan would have a strong chance of adding Hester if the Wolverines push, but it’s unclear if they will do so. So far, there have just been preliminary conversations.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Ashland, Ky., product had 31 kickoff returns for 579 yards with a 47-yard long against Morgan State. His 18.7-yard average ranked seventh in the MAC last season among players with 1.2 or more returns per game.

Hester rushed for 10 yards on 3 rushes in 2022. He racked up 274 yards and 2 touchdowns on 65 carries in 2021. Hester spent four years at Akron and has one year of eligibility remaining.
