‘Really good job’: Damon Hill hails 72-race driver who has ‘stepped up’ in 2024 during Miami GP weekend

The Miami Grand Prix proved to be another fascinating weekend of action in Formula 1 as a track known for being notoriously difficult to overtake found other ways to create drama.

For the first time in 110 Grand Prix, Lando Norris finally stood on the top step of the podium after a phenomenal performance in his newly upgraded McLaren.

Taking to Instagram, former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill praised another driver exceeding expectations on the grid.

There have been several examples of drivers going above and beyond during the first six race weekends.

Carlos Sainz has been driving like a man who doesn’t have a confirmed seat for 2025 just yet.

Esteban Ocon put in another strong performance for Alpine, finally scoring their first point of the season after eight attempts including the Sprint Races.

However, during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Hill was quick to praise how well Yuki Tsunoda has driven in 2024.

He came home in the top ten once again after a strong qualifying performance and held off the Mercedes of George Russell to add six more points to his tally.

The fate of the two V-CARB drivers appears to be completely intertwined.

It’s almost impossible for both drivers to do well during the same race and that was the case again in Miami.

Tsunoda had a tough Sprint Race qualifying while Daniel Ricciardo put his car on the second row of the grid.

He then brilliantly held onto that position to score his first points of the season, although Tsunoda did very well to earn the final point of the race thanks to Lewis Hamilton’s penalty.

However, when it came to qualifying for the main race, Tsunoda managed to reach Q3 while Ricciardo started at the back of the grid.

The Australian had too much to do in the race to finish in the points once again, but Tsunoda outdid himself in Miami and showed why Hill has been keen to praise him.

However, Logan Sargeant might not be too pleased with the Japanese driver who arguably ruined his qualifying session at his home race.

Posting on Instagram about the 23-year-old, Hill said: “He’s done a really good job. Steped [stepped] up, for sure.”

Hill responded to a post from Autosport who spoke to Honda president Koji Watanabe.

Tsunoda has a connection with the power unit supplier having worked with them over the past few years at V-CARB.

Honda become Aston Martin’s engine supplier in 2026 and Tsunoda has admitted that there’s a chance he will make the same move.

Asked about that prospect, Watanabe said: “We still don’t know what Aston Martin’s line-up will be like. Alonso has been confirmed, but I have not yet heard that Stroll has been confirmed.

“I don’t think there is a zero chance of that happening, so I think there is a possibility of that happening at this point.”

Hill and the rest of the F1 paddock have been very impressed by Tsunoda and he proved again in Miami how he’s taken another step forward this year.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, he’ll be hoping that his performances at the beginning of the campaign can get the ball rolling on agreeing to a fifth year in the sport.
