’Slot will have to’: Craig Burley suggests Klopp would sell Liverpool 24-year-old if he was staying

Jurgen Klopp would have been breathing a sigh of relief when his Liverpool team secured a 4-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Many associated with Liverpool were worried that their manager’s reign was going to end in a stale manner and on a sour note after recent results and performances.

Everyone acknowledges that the Premier League title race is gone, it’s just a matter of the maths doing the rest.

When the Premier League season draws to a close, attention will turn to the summer transfer market and ironing out the squad.

From Saudi target Mohamed Salah to Virgil van Dijk, the new manager is going to have some huge calls to make in the transfer market.

But one player who could be heading out of the exit door sooner rather than later is Darwin Nunez, according to Craig Burley, as he told ESPN.

The former Scotland international suggested that if Klopp was staying then he would consider moving him on – Nunez was signed from Benfica in 2022.

The question was put to Burley about how long Slot gives Nunez, given his indifferent form, before he sells him.

Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool future

“He (Slot) comes in, anybody who is underperforming, he isn’t going to be able to rely on,” said Burley.

“He is going to have to make changes. If Klopp was staying, then he would have had to be thinking about that. As much as he likes him, he is honest, hard-working and he gets his quota of goals. He gets a bit frustrated. But he will have to make big decisions.”

Darwin Nunez needs Mohamed Salah to stay

The 24-year-old should have one wish and one wish only heading into next season and that’s Salah staying.

It’s going to be hard enough for Liverpool to cope without Klopp, but to lose their star forward as well, it would really dampen the mood around the camp.

But Nunez, more than anyone else, needs the Egypt star at the table because of his reliability in front of goal.

You know Salah is going to hit close to 20 Premier League goals, if not more. That then allows Nunez to be inconsistent because of what is around him.

But sometime soon, he needs to get his act together because even his own fans will start to be ultra-critical and want him gone.
