Pat Bonner urges summer Celtic spending on talent who 'really livens the place up'

Celtic’s goalscoring this season hasn’t been reliant on one player despite the talent available in the Bhoys attack.

Kyogo Furuhashi is the club’s leader on the scoring charts with 18 in all competitions, while Matt O’Riley isn’t too far behind on 15.

Elsewhere, Daizen Maeda and Luis Palma have both contributed with nine. Adam Idah has hit the back of the net on seven occasions despite only being here since January and often being used as a substitute rather than a starter.

Idah’s future is an interesting subject. Only on loan from Norwich, it’s unclear whether he’s set for a Celtic stay.

Norwich City are reported to be seeking at least £5m for his services, which is an achievable outlay for the Bhoys but would still make a significant dent in the summer transfer budget.

Former Celtic hero wants Adam Idah stay

BBC Sportsound pundit and former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner is eager to see the Republic of Ireland international make his switch to Glasgow permanent.

Asked by colleague Liam McLeod whether he’d want to see the Bhoys sanction a five or six million pound move for the striker, Bonner said: “I would love to see him here. I think he would get opportunities to score goals and his confidence would be high. He would learn a lot under Brendan Rodgers who is a real development-type manager.

“I didn’t know how he was going to do coming in but he has impressed me. There are moments in his game that really livens the place up – he leads the line really well.

“I think they do need another striker alongside that but the way Brendan wants to play is with the one striker up front. To keep three strikers happy at a club like this is not easy.”

Idah, Hyeongyu Oh and the Celtic striking position

Given he has been frozen out of the picture, it’s easy to forget that Hyeongyu Oh remains at the club, so there are other back-up options if Celtic can’t do a deal with Norwich.

However, it is likelier that the Bhoys will invest in the position this summer, whether it’s for Idah or not. Rodgers has only handed Oh three starts since returning as manager so there are legitimate question marks about whether he rates him as an option.

For me, Idah has shown he is a more viable successor to Giorgos Giakoumakis than Oh and spending £5m for someone to fulfil that kind of role is worth it.
