Police clear pro-Palestinian protest outside elite Paris university

Paris police have cleared a pro-Palestinian protest camp in front of the elite Sciences Po university.

Police announced on Monday that around 80 people had been removed from the street in front of the university's main building. The demonstrators had set up tents there while students were taking exams at the university. According to the police, the eviction was peaceful.

Students had previously blocked buildings at the institution. They are upset about their university's stance on the Gaza war and are demanding that co-operation with Israeli universities be placed under scrutiny.

Pro-Palestinian students at other Sciences Po campuses in France and at other French universities have recently blocked parts of the universities. Anti-Semitic statements were also made during the protests.

As the BFMTV channel reported, there were also blockades at Sciences Po campuses in Reims and Strasbourg on Monday.

The Gaza war was triggered by the unprecedented massacre of more than 1,200 people killed by militants from the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement and other groups in Israel on October 7. Israel responded with massive airstrikes and a ground offensive.

In view of the high number of civilian casualties and the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, Israel is being increasingly criticized internationally.
