'Uhhhhhh': Matt Gaetz mocked for saying he's never been accused of wrongdoing

US Republican Representative Matt Gaetz

Rep. Matt Gaetz Monday claimed no human being has ever accused him of wrongdoing and faced almost immediate mockery on social media.

Gaetz was responding to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's claim that the Florida Republican had him removed to stymie an House Ethics Committee probe into allegations Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl.

"There's not a single human being who has publicly accused me of any wrongdoing of any kind," Gaetz said. "At what point after these things have been said about me, for years and years, and not a single person has even accused me of wrongdoing, does this sort of become a strange urban legend?"

The clip quickly made its way to social media and became the subject of ridicule.

"Uhhhhhh," posted the Lincoln Project's Rick Wilson.

"To be fair," replied X user ProLib, "Matt Gaetz doesn't see females as human."

Gaetz has faced a Justice department investigation and House probe linked to the allegations.

McCarthy, pushed out in 2023 by a group since nicknamed the "Gaetz 8," last month blamed his ouster on the Florida Republican without mentioning his name.

"I'll give you the truth why I'm not speaker," McCarthy said. "It's because one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old."

The following statement may be why X user @ArtCandee replied, "Kevin McCarthy would like a word."

But Gaetz earned support from one unlikely ally, Keith Olbermann, who declared "Eddie Munster is right."

X user Lonnie Hammack suggested the comment showed Gaetz was unaware of Trump-era White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's claim that he once stroked her chin and asked “has anyone ever told you you’re a national treasure?”

"Apparently Gaetz hasn't ready Cassidy Hutchison's book," he said.
