’Turned down at Chelsea’: Garth Crooks says Liverpool midfielder is having an 'excellent season'

Liverpool injected some much-needed confidence into the team on Sunday by beating Tottenham 4-2 at Anfield.

On paper, Liverpool were playing a team in a much worse head space than them after Spurs’ back-to-back London derby defeats.

But Jurgen Klopp has watched his team struggle against all sorts of opposition during the past several months, especially in front of goal.

With two goals in either half – Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott – that ruthless nature was back.

One man who is rightfully getting plaudits left, right and centre for his efforts is rising star and gifted footballer, Elliott, after his wonder goal against Tottenham.

Back in 2019, when in the colours of Fulham, the left-footed midfielder became the youngest player in Premier League history.

Elliott isn’t big in stature, but he can get around the pitch and his footballing brain is of high quality, especially for someone of his age.

Garth Crooks named the 21-year-old in his Team of the Week and added that he is having an ‘excellent season’ for his boyhood club, as he told BBC Sport.

But the former striker also pointed out that Elliott was ‘turned down at Chelsea’ when he was a youngster for being ‘too small’ and he just can’t understand why clubs in England still think in that way.

Harvey Elliott has a bright future at Liverpool

“At no stage did Spurs look like they were going to get anything out of this match and, by the time Harvey Elliott had hit an absolute belter from just outside the box, the game was all over,” insisted Crooks.

“Spurs rallied but it was in vain. Elliott has had an excellent season and proved he has a future at Anfield.

“Not bad for a kid who was turned down at Chelsea because he was too small. I’m amazed football clubs in England still think in those terms.”

Liverpool in the summer transfer market

There were big changes to Liverpool’s midfield last summer and someone like Elliott deserves credit for stepping up and trying to make that role his own.

But with Klopp set to depart and Arne Slot coming in, you question just how much money FSG will provide to their new manager.

Someone like Elliott should be front and centre of Slot’s plans. Klopp certainly wants him to take that next step.

But you also feel the Liverpool youngster needs some know-how around him so he can continue to progress in his career and become a key player for the club.
