'We're going to...': Paul Warne now drops Derby County summer transfer hint after League One promotion

Derby County boss Paul Warne has dropped a huge hint over his sides’ recruitment direction after their promotion to the Championship.

Derby sealed their return to the Championship with a 2-0 win over Carlisle United.

The players have since been enjoying a well-earned break and a trip to Las Vegas as a bonus for winning promotion.

It’s a much-needed rest after a gruelling 46-game League One campaign and once they return to training, they’ll be looking to tackle the tough challenge of the second tier.

Paul Warne has some big decisions to make over the personnel in his squad – including the 12 players whose contracts expire in June – as he attempts to assemble a squad capable of holding its own in the division above.

Derby are yet to reveal their release/retained list like most clubs, but once they do, supporters will have an idea of where needs strengthening most.

Paul Warne reveals Derby County recruitment direction

Derby can ill-afford to make the fatal mistakes of their previous ownership where they spent heavily.

Instead, the Rams will be shopping for some quality loan players and gems in the transfer market, either on a free or a cut-price deal.

Warne and his scouting team have proven they can operate from no budget as Derby were forced into signing players on a free transfer or loan last summer.

With those restrictions now removed by the EFL, David Clowes can afford to spend and Warne has revealed where they’ll be focusing their recruitment.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph, the 50-year-old said: “We have to look at the free list, really, which everyone else will look at, but the Championship one isn’t out until the end of the month.

“There are games in Holland that me and my staff are going to, there’s a game in Denmark that we’re going to, to watch these certain players. I met a player yesterday, and I’m meeting another player either today or next week.”

Derby can unearth gems from the Netherlands and Denmark

Derby have pencilled in trips to the Netherlands and Denmark not just to see their squad in action, but to look at any talent worth adding.

The value of looking abroad for talent is much better than paying over the odds for players from England. Given the Rams are competing against many clubs for sought-after English players, the price of those individuals is inflated.

Indeed, it is wise for Derby to shop abroad and unearth a lesser-known gem as opposed to looking closer to home for players.

Hopefully, those two trips will be successful for the club and they find some quality talent ready to take the Championship by storm.
