'I just worry': Ben Foster has a big concern with Newcastle player Callum Wilson after he scored again

Callum Wilson is back from injury and has a point to prove, but it might be too late for the Newcastle United striker.

He recently returned from a pectoral injury, much to the delight of Eddie Howe, who now has two fully fit goalscorers to choose from.

Callum Wilson is certainly making up for lost time, and has scored twice since his comeback. He found the net in the 5-1 win over Sheffield United, while he scored the opener against Burnley on Saturday. That was a vital goal, and set Newcastle United on their way to an important win.

The 32-year-old played a pivotal role in the Magpies securing three points, and he did it in front of Gareth Southgate, who continues to ponder who to take to the Euros.

Callum Wilson’s late England push for Euro 2024

With England competing in the Euros this summer, it will not be long before Gareth Southgate decides which players he is taking with him to Germany.

From the Newcastle United squad, Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon are the most likely to be selected. The latter made his Three Lions debut during the last international break, and really impressed Southgate.

The England boss will also be debating which strikers to take. Harry Kane is guaranteed to be included, while Ollie Watkins should also be involved given the season he has had. But if Southgate wants to take a third striker, Wilson may feel as though he has a chance.

Why Ben Foster is worried about Newcastle United’s number nine

However, retired goalkeeper Ben Foster has suggested that Wilson’s injury record could go against him, having discussed the Newcastle striker on the Football Fill-In on YouTube.

“I think Callum Wilson has always kind of just been a little bit overlooked just because of his injury record,” he said.

“And the thing is for Newcastle, they kind of work his week so that he is ready for the game on Saturday. He probably has a bit of a down week really, sort of rests and recovers because he is very susceptible to injuries and I think that’s the problem when it comes to England.

“The players that aren’t going to be on the pitch on the Saturday afternoon or 3 o’clock kickoff or whenever it comes, you need the rest of that 15 squad, the rest of them players to be at it, you need them every day to be at it in training to keep all the morale going, to keep the standards high, and I just worry that Callum Wilson won’t be able to do that for Gareth Southgate.”

Too late for England, but not for Newcastle

Foster makes a good point about Wilson and his fitness, and it is probably why he will miss out on a place in the England squad.

But while his international future is in limbo, the same could be said for his club career. Wilson has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park this summer, but has stated that he will be back with the club when pre-season begins.

That is what Eddie Howe wants, preferring to keep the striker rather than sell him.

And Wilson is currently proving that could be wise, as it will be incredibly expensive to sign a replacement. While it might be too late for Wilson to force his way into the England squad, he is proving that it might be better if Newcastle United keep him rather than cash in.
