Report: Sheffield Wednesday fan favourite now has growing suitors with EFL clubs plotting swoop

Clubs in the English Football League are lining up to sign this Sheffield Wednesday player.

Sheffield Wednesday have a number of first-team players out of contract this summer, including both Liam Palmer and Josh Windass who scored the all-important goals in the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

Elsewhere, there’s a number of fringe players out of contract as well as the loan contingency, with Sheffield Wednesday already linked with a return for Brighton loan star James Beadle ahead of the summer transfer window.

Another name out of contract this summer is Lee Gregory. The 35-year-old striker featured just 13 times in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, scoring once and failing to appear at all in 2024, but The Star say that he has plenty of interest ahead of next season.

Lee Gregory transfer interest ahead of Sheffield Wednesday exit

The Star have revealed that Gregory is definitely set to leave Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent this summer, with three clubs in the EFL now interested.

Gregory is a seasoned striker who’s been with the Owls since 2021. He netted 17 League One goals in his first season at the club and then 11 more as Sheffield Wednesday earned promotion from League One in 2022.

Throughout his career, in which Gregory has represented the likes of Millwall, Stoke City, Derby County, and now Wednesday, Gregory has 147 total goals in 441 appearances.

Derby County tried to re-sign Gregory on deadline day in February but Sheffield Wednesday pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

Where next for Lee Gregory

One team linked with Gregory earlier this season was Wrexham.

They’ve since been promoted to League One which seems to be where Gregory’s best level is right now, so a summer move to Wrexham on a free transfer could be a good option for the striker.

He’ll be eager to prove that he’s still a striker capable of scoring goals when he joins his next club, following what will have been a very testing season with Sheffield Wednesday.

Some may say that his treatment in S6 this season has been unfair. He was well out of favour when Derby County came calling, but for whatever reason, he was kept in S6, only to never feature ever again.

So Gregory will certainly be out with a point to prove this summer and he’ll leave with the well wishes of Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

Gregory’s goals in League One helped get Wednesday over the line and eventually set them up for this summer ahead under Danny Rohl, which looks set to be a very promising one indeed.
