'Unlucky': Dominic Calvert-Lewin sends honest message to Everton's critics this season

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has sent a bullish message to Everton’s critics after the Toffees’ superb recent run of results.

Sean Dyche’s men have won three of their last four matches and are coming off a hard-earned 1-1 draw against Luton Town.

After a 13-game winless run, starting at the turn of the year, it’s been an impressive turnaround for the Blues and Dyche.

Evertonians have now seen a glimpse of what this side is capable of, and there’s even some optimism heading into the new season, providing off-the-field matters are sorted out.

Calvert-Lewin has enjoyed a rich vein of form in front of goal, scoring four times in his past five matches; his performance against Liverpool saw Gary Neville pile on the praise whilst on Sky Sports’ co-commentary.

The 27-year-old has come under criticism at times this season after enduring a barren run without a goal.

Those critics have been well and truly silenced, and the Everton forward has now opened up on some of the comments thrown his and the Toffees’ way.

“We felt a lot of people were against us [this season],” he told the club’s official website. “We fought against that and stuck together. With Friday’s game being on TV, I think everyone wanted it to be a bottom-of-the-table scrap, didn’t they? Unlucky.”

“We’re obviously happy to be in the position that we are. Not fighting that and being able to come into the game, play with freedom and confidence. We didn’t take the three points, but we’re still fighting and want to finish as high as we possibly can.”

Fighting talk from the Everton striker

Fighting talk from the Everton striker, but he’s earned the right to hit back at his critics.

His form has been really impressive of late, playing an essential part in securing the club’s Premier League status for next season.

The criticism, at times, was justified, but it’s Calvert-Lewin’s reaction that must be noted. The 27-year-old has led the line brilliantly in recent weeks and could even be in with an outside shot of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships in Germany.

Everton’s topscorer must be targeting this weekend’s clash against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United. Another goalscoring return could see calls for an England call-up start gathering serious momentum.

Currently, it’s unclear who will be selected as Harry Kane’s understudy for this summer’s competition.
