Shipping resumes in Bosporus after vessel from Ukraine runs aground

Shipping traffic has resumed in the Bosporus Strait following a nearly 10-hour pause caused by a stranded freighter from Ukraine, state media and coastal safety authorities said.

The waterway in Turkey's Istanbul, connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, was closed early Tuesday after the vessel suffered an engine failure and ran aground.

The vessel, named Alexis, was carrying food products from Ukraine to Egypt. It was towed to safety, the coastal safety directorate wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

The Bosporus has served as a gateway for Ukrainian grain to world markets amid the Russian invasion.

Nearly 40,000 ships passed through the Bosporus in 2023, according to the Turkish Transport Ministry.
