'Massive for me': Derby County star shares what Paul Warne did to make him a 'better player' this season

A Derby County player has now revealed what Paul Warne has done to make him a better player this season.

Paul Warne has done an excellent job at Derby County since arriving at the club in September 2022.

Having finished just narrowly outside the play-offs in his first season in charge, the 50-year-old achieved automatic promotion in his second, with a 2-0 win over Carlisle United seeing his side over the line.

During his time at Pride Park, Warne has shown incredible man management and an ability to improve players in his squad.

Despite working off a shoestring budget, as the EFL imposed spending restrictions on the Rams, the Derby boss has still been able to work magic in the transfer window.

He’s brought in and improved the likes of James Collins, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Curtis Nelson across the last two summers.

Collins finished as Derby’s top scorer, Mendez-Laing was named in the League One Team of the Season and Nelson won the club’s Player of the Season award.

That trio aren’t the only individuals who have seen an increase in form, with academy graduate Eiran Cashin seeing immense improvements.

Eiran Cashin says how Paul Warne has improved him

Cashin’s rise towards first-team stardom has been accelerated by the man management of Warne.

Now one of the first names on the team sheet, the 22-year-old is a Premier League potential defender and his partnership with Nelson helped the Rams achieve promotion.

Speaking to RamsTV, Cashin has explained how Warne has improved him: “He’s been really good for me. He’s put a lot of faith in me, challenged me when I need to be challenged and tried to make me a better player, which I think he has.

“The relationship that he has brought in with Nels is massive for me too because not only has he boosted the squad but he’s helped me improve my game. It’s the same with Sonny Bradley, too. The gaffer knows the right people to bring in, good people.

“I’m very thankful for that and overall he’s been very good for me on and off the pitch. To be able to pay him back with promotion and some good performances is perfect.”

Cashin showed so much loyalty when he signed a long-term contract in February after Premier League side Brighton tried to sign him, but that doesn’t mean he won’t depart in the summer.

Derby must brace for Eiran Cashin offers

Although Derby have protected themselves from losing Cashin for cheap by giving him a new deal, that won’t stop top-end Championship or Premier League sides from wanting him in the summer.

After all, Brighton were perilously close to signing him previously, but they didn’t get the paperwork done in time.

All the credit has to go to Cashin in that situation, though, as while he could have been disappointed not to have completed a top-flight move, he didn’t let that deter his form.

Instead, he used it as fuel to get Derby promoted with the Rams boasting the best defence in the division.

The academy graduate adores the club he grew up supporting and will want to tackle the Championship, but that won’t stop clubs from showing an interest.

Derby will have to hold firm in their valuation and hope a lucrative offer isn’t thrown in his direction. If they can hold onto him, he will no doubt play a vital role in the next chapter of the clubs history.
