'It is our understanding': Jim White shares what he's heard about West Ham and Lopetegui amid potential twist

West Ham United will begin a new era as of next season, with David Moyes set to leave the London Stadium at the end of the season.

The Hammers announced in an official statement on Monday that they would be parting ways with the 61-year-old manager.

In terms of who will replace Moyes at West Ham, speculation has been doing the rounds claiming Julen Lopetegui has agreed to take the reins.

BBC Sport have reported that the former Spain, Real Madrid and Wolves boss has agreed a deal to become the new Hammers boss.

However, it doesn’t appear to be a done deal just yet. The BBC Sport report stressed that ‘nothing has been signed yet’.

Now, talkSPORT’s Jim White has provided an update on Tuesday regarding West Ham’s chances of landing Lopetegui.

What has Jim White said about West Ham and Julen Lopetegui?

White said on talkSPORT (7/5/24, 11:24am): “It is our understanding, it is certainly my understanding, that Lopetegui is 80 percent likely to succeed Moyes.

“So, what’s the 20 percent doubt? The fact that Bayern Munich still show interest.”

All in all, it’s a pretty optimistic report from White. West Ham are clearly in the driver’s seat to land Lopetegui.

Let’s hope things get done quickly and the Hammers can officially present the Spaniard as their new head coach as soon as possible.

Moyes has done a great job at West Ham, guiding them to the Europa Conference League trophy last year and taking them to the Europa League quarter-finals this season.

However, with his contract running out at the end of the season, things have aligned quite well in terms of the Hammers being able to go in a different direction.

Lopetegui is a great shout for West Ham as his CV is star-studded and he has solid Premier League experience too.

He won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 before moving to Molineux two years later and helping them survive despite being bottom when he joined.

Wolves finished 13th under Lopetegui last season, but he had become frustrated by the club’s financial situation before opting to step down.
