Maradona's Golden Ball from 1986 World Cup to be auctioned in France

The Golden Ball trophy awarded to late Argentina great Diego Maradona as the best player of the 1986 World Cup will be auctioned at Aguttes in France, the auction house said on Tuesday.

Aguttes didn't initially give an estimated price. Two years ago, Maradona's match-worn jersey from the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals was auctioned for €8.4 million ($9.04 million).

Argentina won their second world title in the 1986 tournament, which is probably best remembered for Maradona's "Hand of God" goal against England in the quarter-finals. He outjumped goalkeeper Peter Shilton by using his hand to put the ball into the net.

Maradona's Golden Ball was missing for 35 years after it was stolen from his safe deposit box in a bank in Naples in 1989. In 2016, a collector in France bought it with a number of other trophies for a few hundred euros without initially knowing what it was.

It was only later that the authenticity of the Golden Ball was established by two experts.

Maradona died in 2020 at the age of 60.
