Met Gala icon Anna Wintour shares what her 'magical' grandchildren call her

The Vogue and Met Gala visionary Anna Wintour has three grandchildren, but she’s revealed they don’t exactly call her grandma.

Anybody with even the slightest taste for fashion will understand just how monumentally important the Met Gala is. The annual fashion event is as prestigious as it gets, held to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. This year’s took place on Monday, May 6th 2024, its red carpet graced by icons from Kim Kardashian to Ariana Grande. And of course, what would it be without Anna Wintour, the global director and editor-in-chief of Vogue, who has chaired/co-chaired the Met Gala since the mid-’90s.

Anna Wintour reveals the name her grandchildren call her

Needless to say, Anna is a titan of the fashion industry and has earned a wealth of accolades and achievements across a storied career. Along with professional titles, the 74-year-old British/American media executive is also a proud and loving grandmother—it’s just not what the grandkids call her, is all.

“What do they call you?” she was asked during an interview with TODAY. “Anna,” she replied.

“They call you Anna?” the interviewer asked in disbelief, surprised to learn she doesn’t adopt the traditional names used by most. “Yes, they do,” Anna added. Considering she’s a fashion visionary, perhaps the unconventional was to be expected.

Anna has three grandchildren. Her grandson is Oliver Sozzani, born of Anna’s daughter Bee and her husband Francesco Carrozzini. She also has two granddaughters from her son Charles Shaffer: Caroline and Ella.

“They’re magical and amazing and funny and they bring a sort of perspective to everything,” she gushed over them during the same interview.

They may simply call her Anna, but it’s clear as day she has many wonderful, beautiful ways to name and describe them.

Anna Wintour has explained the meaning of this year’s Met Gala theme

There’s no confusion surrounding what Anna’s grandkids call her. Nevertheless, there was
some uncertainty when it came to the theme of the 2024 Met Gala Event, which served as the grand opening for the museum’s new exhibit, Sleeping Beauties.

“The idea of Sleeping Beauties is taking these masterpieces from different periods,” she clarified to TODAY, “and because so many of them are very fragile they are laid flat behind glass walls.”

The clothes being presented from behind glass is reminiscent of the imagery from the iconic Disney Animation Sleeping Beauty, hence the name.

“When we came up with the title Sleeping Beauties, it’s wonderful and poetic and romantic, but actually, it could be many, many things…” she accepted. “I fear that we’ve unleashed a lot of confusion out there, and for which I deeply apologize.”

Confusion or not, the event was a colossal success and is dominating the cultural conversation right now. It may have been called Sleeping Beauties, but the world’s eyes are wide open to its allure.
