Financial expert fires FFP warning to Aston Villa ahead of the summer transfer window

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has fired a warning to Aston Villa ahead of the transfer window if they want to pass FFP.

Despite Villa’s successes in the 2023/24 campaign, one issue that continues to raise its ugly head is FFP.

In 2024, it was revealed that Villa had lost just under £120 million in 2023. This has caused concern for Unai Emery’s side, especially after the Premier League recently cracked down on the issue.

In recent months, the Birmingham outfit has seen some improvements to their financial issues. Villa are set to bring in millions of pounds worth of prize money from both the Premier League and the Europa Conference League.

However, despite this income, Maguire believes that Villa will be forced to ensure additional income is made this summer so they comply with the rules.

The departure of players in the transfer window is one of the quickest ways for a team to ensure it complies with the rules.

Last summer, Wolves were forced into selling multiple first-team players such as Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes. Now, it seems that Villa could end up following a similar path.

Speaking about Villa’s financial situation, Maguire believed that the club should be ‘ok’ providing they sell a couple of players.

He said: “I personally think Aston Villa will be okay under UEFA rules because the cap is for 80% of player wages. You then have agent fees & Villa’s amortisation isn’t too high by Premier League standards. If they sell a couple players then they’ll be okay.”

Aston Villa FFP news comes as no surprise

If Villa are forced to sell a player this summer, it will come as no surprise to the Villa Park faithful.

In recent years, the Birmingham outfit’s only major departure was Jack Grealish. As a result, it was inevitable that another big departure was on its way.

Unfortunately, if Villa wants to keep climbing the Premier League pyramid, they must become transfer-savvy.

Monchi will no doubt help with this. The President of Footballing operations has already made fantastic purchases such as Pau Torres and Morgan Rogers.

If Villa can bring in players of similar quality for low fees while losing a major star, they will be fine.
