Owen Hargreaves says Tottenham wouldn’t be able to sign anybody who’s better than their £42m player

Tottenham need upgrades through the door this summer.

The last few weeks have shown that Tottenham are miles away from where they need to be, and in order to get better, they need to upgrade their squad.

Some of Spurs’ players, sadly, aren’t good enough, and there will need to be a few ins and outs if Ange Postecoglou wants to take this team to the top.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Owen Hargreaves has stated that Tottenham do need to change a number of their players, but, interestingly, he said that Spurs wouldn’t be able to upgrade on either Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero.

Tottenham can’t upgrade on Cristian Romero

Hargreaves spoke about the £42m man and Van de Ven.

“That is going to continue until he gets players who make less mistakes. One thing I would say is I don’t think they will get a better centre-back than Romero or a better centre-back than Van de Ven, so it will have to be in the middle of the park,” Hargreaves said.

Tottenham’s centre-backs are very good

Say what you will about Tottenham’s recent defensive performances, individually, Tottenham’s two centre-halves are top players.

Cristian Romero is a World Cup winner who can shackle any striker, while Micky van de Ven has been one of Spurs’ top performers all year long.

Frustratingly, Spurs’ tactical set-up does often leave these two without much support from the midfield or from the full-backs, and that leads to Tottenham leaking goals.

If Ange Postecoglou can just make his midfield a bit more solid and ask his full-backs to play a bit more conservatively, Tottenham could have a really strong defensive base, but, as things stand, Spurs are going to get caught out again and again, despite having two fantastic centre-backs on their books.
