Report: European club were so close to signing Cole Palmer on loan before his move to Chelsea last summer

Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City last summer, but it looks like the attacker almost ended up at another club.

Thankfully for Chelsea that never happened because he has been an absolute revelation for them this season.

In the Premier League, Cole Palmer has scored 21 goals and registered nine assists.

Across all competitions, he has netted 24 times and set up his teammates on 13 occasions.

The 22-year-old has just claimed the Chelsea Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards. For the latter, he voted for Malo Gusto and explained why.

Chelsea could have missed out on Cole Palmer

Chelsea signed Palmer from City in a £45m permanent deal. However, it looks like the Englishman nearly joined another club on loan before the Blues came knocking.

According to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad, PSV Eindhoven were close to bringing Palmer in on loan.

In fact, their report claims that the Eredivisie outfit almost succeeded in landing the England international.

Again, thankfully for Chelsea, they failed there.

Without him, it is scary to imagine where Mauricio Pochettino‘s men would be this season.

Chelsea fans will get to see more of Cole Palmer and Reece James next season

In the end, Chelsea were able to land Palmer, and it has now proven to be one of the deals of 2023.

Unfortunately for Palmer, he has had to play in a Chelsea team ravaged by injuries. Captain Reece James is one of those players who has been injured, but now that he has undergone surgery on his hamstring, the Stamford Bridge faithful should get to see more of the 24-year-old and Palmer combining on the right flank next season.

If James struggles for fitness again, though, then Palmer is likely to continue his partnership with Malo Gusto if Pochettino decides to keep him on the flank.

With the form that Noni Madueke has been in of late, the England U21 international could easily win that spot on the right, while Palmer is moved into a more central position.
