'Played a role': £35m star's father now explains what helped convince him to want to leave Chelsea

A lot of players have left Chelsea recently and gone on to thrive.

For example, last summer, the likes of Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic left Chelsea and are now doing really well at Arsenal and AC Milan respectively.

Havertz has come up with 18 goal contributions in the Premier League for Arsenal, while Pulisic has produced 17 in Serie A for Milan.

In January, Ian Maatsen left Chelsea for Borussia Dortmund, and things are also going to plan for him there.

The left-back has just helped Dortmund to reach the Champions League final.

Chelsea player’s father explains move

Ahead of Dortmund’s win against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie, Maatsen’s father shared what helped convince his son to leave Chelsea for Edin Terzic’s side.

In an interview with Algemeen Dagblad, Maatsen Sr said: “What played a role here was that we knew that the club had been following Ian for much longer and they could tell very clearly what his strengths and weaknesses are.”

It is a move that has really worked out for Maatsen to say the least.

Under Mauricio Pochettino this season, he only made one start in the Premier League. At Dortmund, he has already made 14 and has reached a Champions League final.

Are Borussia Dortmund going to buy Ian Maatsen after contribution in Champions League run?

Maatsen has certainly played his part in helping Dortmund book their ticket to Wembley.

He has played in all of their knockout games and has even managed to score a goal along the way.

It would be a shock if the Bundesliga club did not try to buy him now.

It has been claimed that negotiations over a permanent deal are already underway and that the 22-year-old does not want to return to Chelsea in the summer.

Maatsen has a £35m release clause in his contract, so a deal is certainly there for someone.
